One of the Best Getaway Places in Western Cape - Buff and Fellow

I saw these luxurious Eco-friendly cabins on social media, on Instagram last year. I told myself I had to try this place with my boyfriend and had to plan our trip. It was a very nice 4 hours long drive through Garden Route from Cape Town. This place is between George and Mosselbay on R102 road, just 10km from George Airport.

What a drive, it was a gorgeous drive from sunset to a big bright full moon. It was so bright and orange that we could see everything the trees and the farm hills. We were howling in our car like wolves and laughed. Traffic was super quiet except there were a lot of lorries on the road and we had to overtake so many times. It was a good drive.

We arrived at the Ultreya Farm, it is a family Du Toit Farm, Ultreya is a Spanish word derived from the original Latin meaning "Onward with Courage". It was in common use by pilgrims to greet and encourage people along the way. This farm encourages you to go "Onward!" and enjoy one of their many activities:

Indian Canoes, Bass Fishing, Buffalo Tour, Red Barn Tastings, Farm Fresh Eggs, and what more, so many activities in one place.

Frederick (Frikkie) is such a friendly person and easy to get into contact with. He will tell you exactly how to get the key and attention to detail was amazing. Such an excellent service. We arrived through the gate and got our key and a remote button. We drove very slowly through the farm to the first gate, second gate, and third gate, the last gate. There are animals around, walking freely on the farm. The gates are for safety for the animals. We arrived at the Ecopod number 3, there are 4 Eco-friendly cabins.

Eco Cabin 1 and 2 are perfect for a group of friends or a family. Eco Pod 3 and 4 are perfect for a couple. Luxury and comfort. Stylist and clean. Ours has an ensuite bedroom with a gorgeous black bath and a huge outdoor shower. It has a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove, a microwave, a fridge, and a dishwasher. How amazing! Lounge with a fireplace and DSTV flat-screen television. Patio with a gorgeous braai and wood-fired hot tub overlooking the beautiful dam and majestic mountains. This cabin had everything you would need and more!

The next morning we got our DIY Breakfast "Meal in a Box". You ordered it through WhatsApp and Frikkie will deliver it to you. These boxes contain unprepared ingredients, recipes, and spices. You get farm-fresh eggs, bacon, farm-style fresh bread, muffins, fig jam, and cheese with avocados, tomatoes, mushrooms, bananas, and apples. We made our breakfast and later enjoyed a wood-fired hot tub with our coffee in our hands with a very delicious farm rusk that you can get from their kitchen. We dipped it in our coffee and enjoyed a gorgeous wildlife animal - Impala, Springboks, Nyala, horse, ponies, and tarentaal birds (guineafowls) walking on the farm in front of our view next to the Ultreye dam. Sounds amazing, right :)

We were in a mood to catch some bass fish. This farm has all the equipment fishing rods and gears. We walked to the Ultreye dam with a bottle of wine and watching the sunset while my boyfriend concentrated so hard to catch bass fish. Unluckily no fish!..... with disappointment, we walked back to our pod and received our DIY Braai Pack "Meal in a Box". In the box are lamb chops, chicken kebabs, boerewors, lemon, fresh rosemary from their very own organic veggie garden, and delicious potato salad. It was the best potato salad we ever had. Before, we set a fire for a braai. We first put the wood-fired hot tub on, it will take about 30minutes to 1hour to make the hot tub warm. While we enjoyed the braai we added more wood to keep the hot tub warm and play music with their Bluetooth speakers. While we relaxing in a hot tub on a cold winter night with the Milky Way shining brightly in the night sky and listening to ducks, quack-quack all night is a memorable moment.

Late morning we walked around the Ultreye dam in sunny weather where you can meet the little adorable ponies eating the grass. After the walk, I prepared a table outside on the deck for DIY Wine Tasting with a variety of specially selected wines from local Wine Farms paired with handmade Belgium Chocolate from their local chocolatier. I ordered it "Meal in a Box" for the first day but we arrived so late and I had to put it away and keep it for the right day. It was perfect with sunset while relaxing on a deck.

Buffalo Tours start at 9 am, it is a fun Game Drive around the farm where you can see the big magnificent creatures up close from calves to alpha buffaloes. There are two Zebras running around the farm and these Zebras love to run away from us while the buffaloes love to follow us because they are expecting treats. We also saw two beautiful South Africa national birds, the blue cranes. It was my first time to see the real blue crane.

Absolutely amazing, it is the best therapy with a gorgeous view, listening to all animals sounds around us and a breathtaking place. Abundant birdlife. Almost every day we made a nice fire inside the cabin and it definitely helped to keep the whole cabin warm in the evening. After we got out of the hot tub we ran to get inside to keep ourselves warm and the fireplace does the amazing trick! We opened box games and played card games by the fireplace, what else is missing? Nothing! They have everything!

It is one of the best places we have visited thus far. We absolutely loved every moment of it. We didn't want to leave and will definitely come back! Do not miss this place out.

ABOUT ME - Pilates Instructor and Miss Deaf South Africa

I was diagnosed as profoundly deaf when I turned 14 months old. It was the late 80's and the ENT specialist told my mom, that I was the deafest person (according to my brainstem audiogram) to be diagnosed. According to doctors and experts, I would never talk. I had a hearing loss of 145 decibels, which means that a Boeing 747 could land behind me, and I would not notice! My mother, Annemarie, resigned from her job as a music teacher and enrolled in a course in Audiology, to reach a language to express myself. Deaf people are immensely frustrated because they have no names for their emotions. My mom used a mirror to show me my anger, happiness, fear, love, etc and taught me words for it these for the first of 4 years of my life, every experience was a language lesson and not an even a picnic or a day at the beach was only an outing, anymore. There were so many words! At this stage, I was wearing Phonak Hearing Swiss which enabled me to hear vowels, but no consonants, amplifie...

What to do when Deaf people feel left out in a crowded room. Here are 5 tips.

*** In my experience as a profoundly deaf teenager in a mainstream school, for the first time,  I must confess that it was very challenging.  I wasn't used to a crowded classroom. At Deaf schools, you have 5 or 6 classmates but  in the mainstream, 30 or 35. On my first day at Jan Van Riebeeck Primary school in Cape Town, I was excited to try this new challenge at the  mainstream school. Suddenly I had 11 new friends  and we were always together. During intervals, w e sat together on the grass in a circle.  A s a Deaf person, I felt left out most of the time because the conversations went on and on from different angles and person s . I became more silent and lonely. It was exhaust ing  for me. I use my eyes for lip reading and felt totally ex hausted after breaks, trying to follow every word my friends spoke, to feel part of the group. After the break, it was back to the classroom and nonstop focusing on  the teacher's lips  until the end of ...
